Two-Up Two-Down House is a reworking of a Victorian mid terrace, using imaginative spatial devices to maximise the limited floor area. Double height volumes, exposed structure and the blurring of rooms combine to introduce light and create the illusion of space.Khan Bonshek’s materially driven experimental approach can be seen in bespoke timber, metal and hand made concrete elements providing texture, moments of delight and playful juxtapositions. Built over a period of four years, Khan Bonshek took a hands on role from demolition through to the finer finishing of the building. Where possible materials have been re-used and reconfigured, whilst the envelope of the building has been upgraded to surpass standards for sustainability &#38;amp; heat loss.The materiality of the building has been carefully considered to provide a rich texture. Sustainable low cost timber and recycled plastics have been combined with reclaimed teak, black marble and brass to elevate the palette. Exposed brick, concrete, LVL timber beams and spruce plywood panelling also combine to give warmth and richness.
“Two-Up Two-Down House exemplifies just how the typical London terrace can be a blank canvas for the adventurous architect. For the project, husband and wife architectural practice Khan Bonshek took on a substantial project to completely overhaul a Victorian house in east London. The resulting home radically rearranges the interior volumes, pushing the space right to the limit of what's possible.”

Mews House

Khan Bonshek were approached to refresh and reconfigure an existing modern mews house in South London.
Working within existing constraints the plan was rationalised, providing dual aspect spaces, layering and the opening up of axial views for improved light and outlook.
The interiors make use of douglas fir timber panelling, precast concrete, clay plaster and handmade tiles to create a rich, textured approach to materiality. Back-to-back joinery partitions, colourful sliding doors and active circulation bring movement and playfulness to the internal spaces.

The Pyramid is a refurbishment of a concept house originally built for the Milton Keynes Homeworld ‘80 Exposition.
Working with the pyramid’s unusual proportions Khan Bonshek have rationalised the floor plan, creating height-and-a-half spaces to add drama, whilst improving the performance of the building in line with the sustainable ideals of the ‘80 expo.
Utilising CNC technology a stacked plywood spiral staircase provides sculptural vertical circulation core. Combined with terrazzo, steel, brass and oak the core form a jewelled centrepiece under the buildings main lantern roof light.

Working with an existing interwar house in Enfield, Khan Bonshek have proposed a sustainable timber clad rear extension that playfully reimagines the connection between living space and the garden.
The proposal looks to rework the entire ground floor; offering generous, light filled dining and family spaces to the rear, with private guest entertaining to the front and practical amenities at the most accessible part of the house.

Sight lines and layered views help compose openings, ensuring the home feels expansive and light from within. Push and pull gestures of the rear facade help to articulate a buffer zone between inside and out. Planning permission was awarded in January 2025. The project is currently in the process of tender and will begin construction later in the year.

Khan Bonshek were approached to reconfigure and rationalise a Victorian terrace in East Ham. The house suffered from a series of poor quality additions which blocked natural light and airflow, resulting in dark and claustrophobic internal spaces.Khan Bonshek have proposed a red engineering brick and zinc hipped gabled extension to create bright lofty living spaces. The hipped massing responds to Newhams tight urban grain allowing for generous floor to ceiling heights internally whilst minimising the impact upon neighbouring homes.A dormer loft extension and additional family bathroom will make the home more comfortable for a growing family.

Khan Bonshek were approched to design a custom built home for their multi-generational family.
Khan Bonshek proposed a series of separate yet interconnected living spaces over the lower levels of the home, providing proximity and privacy for the three generations of family living together in the house. The kitchen forms the heart of the house, with passive sight lines across the living spaces, rear garden and lightwell. 
Accessibility was key for the family, the inclusion of a sculptural top lit half round staircase and adjacent platform lift ensured that circulation around the building was easy and joyful, for both young and old.
Taking cues from the interwar semidetached housing adjacent Khan Bonshek proposed a modern new build home utilising elements of Art-Deco detailing and massing. Copper standing seam roofing, hand formed grey bricks and precast concrete added a rich material palette to the home.

Khan Bonshek were approached to carry out a renovation of a North London townhouse. As with a lot of North and North East London Victorian homes the ground floor was split between a grand upper ground floor comprising two formal reception rooms and more cramped lower ground floor housing the kitchen and former servant spaces. This arrangement dates back to the building up of the street level using spoil from construction, and an age when the upper middle classes would have live in help. In a modern context this arrangement often results in reduced ceiling heights, compromised connections to gardens and convoluted interior plans
Our proposal rationalise the oddities of this defunct living arrangement, drawing out expansive lofty spaces with a semi buried garden room. For this project, we have accentuated the change in level to provide a sunken and humble proposal that brings dreamy skies in, creates high ceilings, and frames the house’s delicate details. We’re exploring natural terracotta materials to work alongside the existing yellow London brick, with timber and exposed finishes to bring warmth.&#38;nbsp; We love it, it works with the topography, and we’re super pleased the home stewards of this little beauty love it too!&#38;nbsp;

Khan bonshek were approached to extend and refurbish a 260m2 town house in Balham. The existing living accommodation to the rear of the house suffered from poor light, outlook and connection to the rear garden. The upper floors no longer served the needs of the Clients who required space for their growing children alongside private space of their own. 


Khan Bonshek proposed a wraparound rear extension in burnt timber, engineering brick and copper. Utilising the proportions of the existing Victorian rear addition Khan Bonshek proposed a playful stepped massing, breaking up the rear facade with the inclusion of a large portal window and full height glazed pivot doors. To create vistas out to the garden, and bring light deep into plan, the portal window flares up and out, whilst an incorporated window seat provides a quiet place to sit whatever the season.


A copper clad rear dormer roof extension provides a creative space for the Client's children, whilst sleeping accommodation is provided via a split level. The first floor volume has been given over to a master suite and home office. The sensitive use of joinery partitions allowing the master suite to be split into bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and ensuite without compromising the front to back aspect of the newly enlarged space.

Working with an existing interwar terraced house on a sloped site, Khan Bonshek have proposed a sustainable timber clad rear extension which makes use of the changing levels to create a generous hight and a half, timber clad, living space.


Utilising a brick plinth, openable panels and a push-pull massing to the rear facade Khan Bonshek have created an efficient layout, with allowance for intimate spaces and texture.


A timber outbuilding on stilts will provide a sound proofed studio space, minimising the buildings impact on the ground&#38;nbsp; whilst mitigating the risk of flooding.
Planning permission awarded September 2024.
